At the request of the Carmel Police Chief and as standard procedure for the Carmel Police Department, the Indiana State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting incident involving a Carmel Police Officer.

Sunday, August 11, at 7:48 p.m., Carmel Police Dispatch received a 911 call reporting a harassment and stalking incident in the 12800 block of Old Meridian Street in Carmel.  A Carmel Police Officer arrived on the scene at 7:55 p.m. and began searching the area for the man who was allegedly harassing the caller.

Officers received a description of the man, later identified as Daniel Castillo, along with a possible vehicle description he was known to drive, a blue sports car. At approximately 8:16 p.m., an officer located a blue Dodge Charger on the third floor of the apartment parking garage, which Castillo occupied. The officer parked his police vehicle in front of the Dodge.

The officer exited his vehicle and ordered the occupant to leave the car. Castillo was not compliant with the officers’ commands. Another officer arrived, but Castillo still refused to exit. Moments later, the suspect drove forward and struck a Carmel Police SUV. One officer fired shots from his issued handgun through the windshield of the Dodge Charger.

The Castillo continued to spin his tires while hitting the police vehicle. Officers broke a window, and Castillo was pulled from the car and handcuffed. Once out of the vehicle, officers discovered Castillo had injuries consistent with a gunshot wound. The officers retrieved medical first aid equipment from their police cars and rendered emergency medical aid until paramedics arrived.

Castillo was transported to an area hospital and is in stable condition; the injuries are reported to be non-life threatening. One officer received a cut to the hand while rendering aid and required medical treatment at a hospital.

Indiana State Police Detectives and ISP Crime Scene Investigators responded to the scene to investigate. This investigation is ongoing, and the information in this release is preliminary. There is no further information to release at this time.

The Carmel Police Department’s standard protocol is to place the officer involved on critical incident leave pending an internal review.

The Indiana State Police are being assisted by the Carmel Police Department and the Hamilton County Prosecutor’s Office with this ongoing investigation.
