Altrusa International of Bedford members work to meet the needs of the community

BEDFORD – The Altrusa International of Bedford met on Monday, August 12, at 5:30 p.m. at the Southland Church of Christ annex.

Life Pantry needs toilet paper, tomato juice, salsa, brownie mix, mayonnaise, and monitor donations.

Mary Barnes asked for volunteers to work at the Lawrence County Museum of History in September and October. Members monitor the front desk and take care of the gift shop all day, every Tuesday.

Altrusa members donate magazines to nursing homes in the area each month. Loretta and David Bailey took 20 magazines to five nursing homes. This is done monthly after magazines are collected and sorted, and an Altrusa sticker is attached.

Sammie Kay Polley reported that the Bedford Parks Department wants four trash bins and six adult picnic tables for next year.  That requires collecting 4000 pounds of bottle caps.  Altrusa Club members sort the caps on Thursday afternoon, and the Parks Department pays to make the items after enough bottle caps are collected.

Altusans assembled 278 book bags.  Each bag contained Crayola Crayons, an Altrusa Coloring Book, a storybook, and a small insert indicating that the items were from Altrusa of Bedford. Hoosier Hills Credit Union donated the book bags. The group reported 173 book bags were delivered to North Lawrence Community Schools Playful Pathways, 28 to Mitchell Head Start, and 77 to Bedford Head Start.

The meeting was adjourned at 6:50 p.m. with the Altrusa Benediction.
