Indiana July 2024 Employment Report

INDIANA—According to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, July’s unemployment rate was 4.0%. By comparison, the national unemployment rate for July is 4.3%.

In addition, Indiana’s labor force participation rate of 62.5% is now .1% higher than it was in June but still slightly below the national rate of 62.7%. This rate is the percentage of Hoosiers 16 and older that are either working or actively looking for work. Those not in the labor force include, primarily, students, retirees and other non-working populations, such as individuals unable to work due to a disability or illness, or adults responsible for their family’s childcare needs.  

Indiana’s total labor force stands at 3,387,066.

Private sector employment in Indiana remained unchanged over the last month. In July 2024, Indiana reported 2,859,300 jobs.

Industries that experienced job increases in July included:

  • Leisure & Hospitality (+ 2,000);
  • Trade, Transportation & Utilities (+2,000);
  • Construction (+ 1,400); and
  • Professional and Business Services (+1,300).

As of July 16, 2024, there were 96,433 open job postings throughout the state. As of the week ending on July 27, 2024, Indiana had 20,275 continued unemployment insurance claims filed.
