INDIANA – The combination of a supermoon and blue moon will peak at 2:26 p.m. ET today, treating sky-gazers worldwide to a rare celestial sight. The last time this lunar event occurred was August 2023, and the next super blue moons are projected for January and March of 2037.
No, the moon won’t appear in the color blue. A seasonal blue moon is the third of four full moons in a single season. This will be the case with our full moon tonight.
Tonight is looking fantastic for viewing, with clear skies firmly in place. A supermoon can be 30% brighter than average.
August’s supermoon kicks off a string of lunar spectacles. September’s supermoon will coincide with a partial lunar eclipse. October will be the year’s closest approach, and November will round out the year.
