Monroe County Sheriff’s Deputy fired for alleged official misconduct

BLOOMINGTON – Probationary Deputy Jeffrey L. Freeman, Jr. has been terminated from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department due to misconduct.

On Thursday, August 22, 2024, Monroe County Sheriff Ruben Marté was notified by the Indiana State Police that they were conducting a criminal investigation into the conduct of a Monroe County Sheriff’s Office probationary deputy. The investigation involves the alleged official misconduct of probationary Deputy Jeffrey L. Freeman, Jr. while on duty on August 21, 2024.

Upon this notification from the Indiana State Police, Sheriff Marté directed his command staff to conduct an administrative review of the incident. This review found that probationary Deputy Freeman had violated department policy during the incident.

As a result, and separate from the criminal investigation, Sheriff Marté placed probationary Deputy Freeman on administrative leave without pay and suspended his police authority. This included the surrender and retrieval process of all police equipment issued to probationary Deputy Freeman.

On August 23, 2024, Probationary Deputy Freeman was served with a termination notice from Sheriff Marté, who fired him as an employee of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office based on policy violations. Probationary Deputy Freeman was appointed to the department on March 10, 2024, and was employed until his termination today.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office fully cooperates with the Indiana State Police investigation. This has been his practice since assuming office on January 1, 2023.
