BEDFORD – Bedford North Lawrence cruised to an overwhelming victory in the Eastern Greene Invitational during girls high school golf action on Saturday afternoon.

The Stars, ranked No.18 in the state poll, posted a sizzling score of 310 (on the West and East courses at Stonecrest) while leaving the rest of the seven-team field in their dust. Barr-Reeve was a distant second with 380.

Kinleigh Root was the medalist with a 1-over 72 that included an eagle as BNL threatened to break the school record (300, shot at Country Oaks in 2018) before settling for a runaway triumph.

“It was a good day to be a Lady Star,” BNL coach Kori Johnston said. “I am so incredibly proud of this team and could go on and on about each one of them. It was a long, hot day, but we still came out, stayed focused and posted some solid scores.

“Overall, our scorecards were littered with birdies and PRs, and these girls showed that the Lady Stars are definitely a team to watch.”

Root finished the West course with an eagle on the par-5 ninth, and she added four birdies on the East side (holes 2, 3, 7 and 9) as she shot her personal-best score. Ellie Horton carded a 79 that featured three birdies (1 and 5 on the West, 2 on the East), and Emma Voris carded a career-best 79 with two birdies.

“Root is just a solid player all around,” Johnston said. “The course was dry and hard, so it set up well for her to hit big drives and easy wedges into these greens.

“Emma Voris literally gave everything she had this round, and even got in the pond on one hole to play a recovery shot out of it. Her white skirt might be ruined now. I’m super impressed by her improvement so far this season and excited to see what else she can do.”

Sammie Nusbaum capped the BNL scoring with 80 (two birdies), and Emma Endris had three birdies during her round of 81 for the balanced Stars.

BNL, which has yet to make its home-course debut at Otis Park this season, will visit Bloomington Country Club to face Bloomington South on Monday.
