Indiana State Police investigating a fatal crash following a police pursuit in Clinton County

FRANKFORT – At the request of Chief Shoemaker of the Frankfort Police Department, the Indiana State Police are investigating a single-vehicle fatal crash that occurred during a pursuit Tuesday morning.

Preliminary findings by Trooper Schroder indicate that just before 2:40 a.m., a Frankfort Police Officer was attempting to locate a vehicle reportedly driving recklessly. The officer identified a 2004 Dodge Durango, matching the description of the reckless driving vehicle, near the Walmart on State Road 28 in Frankfort.

When the officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop, the Durango driver failed to comply and fled eastbound on State Road 28. The pursuit continued eastbound on State Road 28, approaching County Road 250 East. At this point, the vehicle veered off the south side of the roadway and then overcorrected, causing it to run off the north side of the road before rolling over and coming to rest.

Despite lifesaving efforts by emergency personnel, one occupant in the vehicle was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Clinton County Coroner. The occupant’s identity is being withheld pending identification and notification of the next of kin. The other occupant in the vehicle was airlifted by medical helicopter to an Indianapolis-area hospital.

Trooper Schroder was assisted at the scene by other troopers from the Lafayette Post, Frankfort Police Department, Clinton County Sheriff’s Office, Clinton County Coroner, Frankfort Fire Department, EMS, and numerous other first responders.
