On Sunday, August 25th, at around 3:05 a.m., Bedford Police Officer Taylor Daugherty spotted a red pickup truck facing west on 29th Street with a non-functioning license plate light and an illegible temporary license plate. After attempting to pull the truck over, Coleman, the driver, fled the scene. Officer Daugherty called for backup.

During the pursuit, Coleman’s truck reached speeds over 100 miles per hour and he was unable to maintain his travel lane. Two passengers jumped out of the moving vehicle while the chase was still ongoing.

One passenger required medical attention for a sprained ankle, while the other complained of back, knee, and neck pain. Both were taken to IU Bedford Hospital for treatment.

The pursuit ended when Coleman lost control of the truck on a gravel road. Police found marijuana, drug paraphernalia, and cash in his possession upon arrest. When questioned, Coleman admitted to being a habitual traffic offender who was in the process of regaining his driver’s license. He also stated that the truck did not belong to him and that “it is passed around”.

Both female passengers stated that they feared for their safety while in Coleman’s company, and that was why they jumped from the moving vehicle.
