EVANSVILLE – Bedford North Lawrence finished fifth in the 25-team Dennis Bays Warrior Invitational during girls cross country action on Saturday at Angel Mounds.

The Stars, racing on the course that will host the IHSAA regional, totaled 188 points. Bloomington South won the team title with 45, while Bloomington North was second with 55.

In the boys race, BNL was seventh out of 26 teams with 214 points. Bloomington North dominated the meet with a winning team total of 27 points, while Floyd Central was second with 89.

BNL’s Paige Voigtschild finished fourth overall with a time of 20:30.3. Other top finishers for the Stars included Claire Voigtschild (34th in 22:32.0) and Elise Williams (38th in 22:37.5).

“Our girls had a really great effort,” BNL co-coach Amy Greenan said. “We had outstanding runs from every one of our top five. We’ve got a few bugs in the back of the pack, but overall this team is learning to race and support each other really well, and it’s showing.  We are really proud of our finish.”

Jabrie Sullivan was 60th (23:29.6) and Francesca Orozco was 66th (23:41.1) to cap BNL’s scoring.

“I was nervous before the race since it’s on the regional course and I thought it would be really hard,” Claire Voigtschild said. “But it wasn’t super bad. It was nice having Elise right with me. We pushed each other to run better and it paid off.”

South’s Lexi Kollbaum was the individual winner in 18:53.4.

In the boys race, BNL’s Jonah Bailey was 24th in 17:28.9, freshman Tucker Inman was 36th in 17:57.3, and Nick Lindley was 38th in 17:58.9.

“Our main goal today was to gain experience on the regional course,” BNL coach Nick Boyd said. “As the season progresses, these are development races to prepare for the sectional and HHC. We lacked acumen in the race today. I think we are young, but learning.

“Sam Strauser and Tucker Inman competed today and I am excited to see how their season progresses. We will look for ways to continue to work together as a team and become more competitive.”

Alex Nicholson was 55th (18:39.2) and Strauser was 75th (19:11.2) to complete the scoring for the Stars.

North’s Jacob Mitchell was the individual winner in 16:01.5.

BNL will compete at North Harrison on Thursday.
