MARTIN CO. – An Indiana man, Nicholas Scott Ingram Hofer, 34, was arrested for allegedly assaulting law enforcement during the January 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol breach. Hofer faces felony charges of assaulting officers and civil disorder, along with several misdemeanors, including entering restricted grounds and engaging in violent conduct.
According to court documents, Hofer was seen among rioters at the Capitol’s West Plaza and later pushing against police lines on the Northwest Stairs. He allegedly helped breach the Capitol by forcing open a door and stealing a riot shield from an officer.
Hofer spent about 38 minutes inside the Capitol, resisting police efforts to remove rioters.
His Facebook profile images were cross-referenced with a bodycam, security camera, and publicly available footage from Jan. 6, 2021. His phone was also traced to the Capitol during the riot.
In June of this year, an FBI special agent surveyed Hofer’s workplace and residence in Martin County to identify him in person.
He was arrested after surrendering at the Federal Courthouse in Indianapolis and is set to appear in the Southern District of Indiana.
The case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, with assistance from the FBI and other law enforcement agencies. The investigation into the January 6 Capitol breach is ongoing.
According to a news release from the FBI, almost 1,500 people have been charged in nearly all United States for Capitol breach offenses. This includes about 550 people with a felony charge of assaulting an officer.
