BEDFORD – A disturbance at the Super 8 Motel in Bedford in the early hours of Wednesday, September 4, led to the arrest of a man who resisted officers and disrupted the peace.
Michael Canfield, 47, of Fort Branch, was taken into custody after a series of disorderly actions and his refusal to comply with law enforcement.
According to Officer Zakry E. Brooking of the Bedford Police Department, officers were dispatched to the Super 8 Motel on Bellback Road at approximately 12:03 a.m.. in response to a report of an unruly guest. The motel’s desk clerk informed the officers that Canfield, a guest in room 107, had repeatedly left his room, yelling loudly and causing a disturbance. Despite her attempts to calm him down and ask him to return to his room, Canfield continued his disruptive behavior, even banging on his door and yelling insults at the clerk.
Officers Brooking and Turner approached Canfield’s room and entered the room using an employee key card after hearing loud yelling and a bang from inside. Canfield was found on the floor, holding his leg and continuing to shout. Despite several warnings from the officers to stop yelling, Canfield refused to comply, drawing the attention of other motel guests who had gathered in the hallway.
Paramedics from IU Health were called to the scene to evaluate Canfield, but he initially refused medical attention. After changing his mind, Canfield was examined, and EMTs recommended that he be transported to IU Health Bedford for further evaluation. Canfield, however, demanded to be taken to Evansville, which the paramedics declined, leading him to refuse further treatment.
While attempting to arrest Canfield, he repeatedly resisted officers, pulling his arms away and refusing to cooperate. After finally being handcuffed, Canfield dropped to the ground in the hallway and demanded that officers carry him. He continued to yell and curse at officers as they escorted him from the motel and transported him to IU Health Bedford for medical clearance.
Following medical evaluation, Canfield was booked into the Lawrence County Jail on charges of disorderly conduct and resisting law enforcement.
This incident underscores law enforcement officers’ challenges when dealing with uncooperative individuals and maintaining public safety during such encounters.
