Family dispute over unauthorized credit card use leads to police investigation

LAWRENCE CO. – A family dispute over alleged unauthorized credit card use has led to a police investigation in Lawrence County, according to a report filed by the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department on August 23, 2024.

The incident began when a woman contacted the Sheriff’s Department, claiming her daughter, 26-year-old Ashlee Stewart, had used her credit card without permission. The woman reported that her bank’s fraud center had alerted her to multiple attempted transactions through Cash App, with one $80 charge successfully processed.

Deputy D. Miller responded to the complaint and interviewed both parties involved. Ashlee Stewart claimed her mother had given her permission to borrow $80, stating she used the money to purchase a toy box and mirror for her children from a neighbor. However, Stewart’s mother denied giving her daughter permission, insisting she had never shared her current card information with her daughter.

The situation turned concerning when the mother reported that her daughter had made alarming statements over the phone, prompting a welfare check. Deputies visited Ashlee Stewart’s residence in Oolitic, where she assured them she had no intentions of self-harm and had merely expressed a desire to cut ties with her mother.

During the investigation, she showed deputies the items she claimed to have purchased with the borrowed money and deleted her mother’s card information from her Cash App account in the presence of law enforcement.

Police forwarded the information to the Lawrence County Prosecutor’s Office, and a warrant was issued for Stewart’s arrest on a theft charge.
