Lawrence County launches Purple Pumpkin Initiative for Domestic Violence Awareness

LAWRENCE CO. – This October, residents of Lawrence County will notice a unique addition to the landscape: purple pumpkins displayed outside the entrance of the Lawrence County Courthouse. This colorful initiative, approved by county commissioners on Tuesday, aims to raise awareness about domestic violence and show support for survivors.

Ginny Fullen, a Lawrence County Coalition Against Domestic Violence (LCCADV) member, proposed the idea during the commissioners’ meeting.

“We want survivors to see purple pumpkins everywhere and to feel the community’s support,” Fullen explained.

The Purple Pumpkin initiative coincides with Domestic Violence Awareness Month, observed annually in October. It seeks to unite advocates nationwide in their efforts to end domestic violence and spread a message of hope and healing throughout the community.

Community involvement is crucial to the success of this awareness campaign. Local businesses and community members are encouraged to display purple pumpkins or sponsor a pumpkin for $10. These sponsorships will directly support the vital services and programs provided by LCCADV.

The choice of purple is significant, symbolizing courage, survival, honor, and dedication to ending domestic violence. By displaying or sponsoring a Purple Pumpkin, participants actively contribute to creating a community that stands against violence and supports survivors.

Amber Richards, the initiative’s contact person, emphasized the importance of community participation. “Whether you’re a business owner or a concerned citizen, there’s a way for everyone to get involved and make a difference,” Richards stated.

For those interested in participating:

  1. Businesses can contact the LCCADV to arrange for a free purple pumpkin display.
  2. Community members can sponsor a pumpkin for $10.

To get involved or for more information, interested parties can contact Amber Richards at 812-329-9669 or arichards@hoosieruplands.org. The Coalition’s Facebook page provides additional details and sponsorship forms.

As October approaches, Lawrence County residents are encouraged to look for these meaningful purple displays and consider how they can contribute to this important cause. The Purple Pumpkin initiative is a visible reminder of the community’s commitment to supporting survivors and ending domestic violence.
