Plane crash in Henry County claims one life

HENRY CO. – The Indiana State Police are assisting the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in investigating an airplane crash near Sulpher Springs.  The incident occurred near US 36 and County Road 200 West on a private airfield in Henry County.

At approximately 2:00 p.m., Henry County Dispatch received 911 calls reporting a small plane had crashed near Robert’s Airfield.  Troopers from the Pendleton District, Henry County Sheriff’s deputies, and first responders arrived at the crash to discover a blue 1975 Stewart Bowers Flybaby that had crashed into a field north of the private runway.  

Firefighters and medical personnel located the pilot and attempted to render medical aid. The Henry County Coroner pronounced the pilot deceased at the scene. The Coroner identified the pilot as David Michael Province, 82, of Middletown, Indiana. The Province’s family has been notified.

Sergeant Brian Thomas’s preliminary investigation revealed that the crash happened sometime during takeoff. Province was the only occupant of the plane, and no other injuries resulted from this crash.

The crash scene and investigation have been turned over to the Federal Aviation Administration.  The Indiana State Police will continue to assist the FAA, however, any determinations made relating to the cause of the crash will be released by their agency concluding a thorough investigation.

The Federal Aviation Administration assisted the Indiana State Police, Henry County Sheriff’s, Henry County Coroner, New Castle EMS, Jefferson Township Volunteer Fire Department, and Prairie Township Volunteer Fire Department.
