INDIANAPOLIS – Gov. Eric J. Holcomb proclaimed September as Campus Fire Safety Month to encourage college/university leadership and students to remember fire safety as classes begin this fall.
Indiana State Fire Marshal Steve Jones and Illinois State Fire Marshal James A. Rivera will visit Indiana State University on Thursday, Sept. 12, at 1 p.m. to emphasize the importance of campus fire safety.
The National Fire Sprinkler Association will perform a live, side-by-side burn demonstration showing the difference sprinklers can make in a fire. One room will be protected by a fire sprinkler, and one room will not.
“Fires that begin in buildings that house so many people have the potential to get out of control quickly and impact a lot of lives,” said Marshal Jones. “It is crucial that leaders take extra steps to protect students as they begin their collegiate journey. Students on their own for the first time also need to take responsibility for their safety and know what to do and where to go if a fire occurs.”
