VIGO CO. – Authorities are investigating a potential threat at Otter Creek Middle School, prompting swift action from police and school officials.
According to a statement from the Vigo County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to the school on Wednesday morning after receiving reports of a possible threat. Both law enforcement and school officials are actively investigating the situation, though details remain limited.
Sheriff Derek Fell addressed the community’s concerns on social media, stating, “We are aware of the situation being reported at Otter Creek Middle School. There has not been any type of shooting incident at the school or surrounding area. There is a threat requiring further investigation at this time. The school is currently on hold. School officials and Sheriff’s Office personnel are actively investigating, and further details will be released when appropriate.”
In a concurrent statement, the Vigo County School Corporation (VCSC) echoed the sheriff’s remarks, emphasizing that safety measures are in place and the situation is being taken seriously. “VCSC Safety and Security and local law enforcement are currently investigating threats received at Otter Creek Middle School. As always, VCSC takes all threats seriously. At this time, students and staff are safe; the school is operating on a ‘hold,'” the statement read.
A “hold” typically means that students remain in classrooms while activities continue, but movement within the school is restricted. No outside activities or recess are allowed during this time.
Reporters on the scene noted that a message was broadcast over the school’s loudspeaker, reassuring those inside that the building is secure and that regular school activities, aside from outdoor events, are continuing as usual.
Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses. For now, the safety of students and staff remains the top priority for law enforcement and school officials.
