BEDFORD— President Bill Barnes led the September Altrusa meeting, which took place at the annex of the Southland Church of Christ. One of the highlights was the guest speaker, Karyn Price, who represented the First United Methodist Church and shared information about their “Grief/Share” project.
This program aims to provide support and healing for individuals who have experienced the loss of a loved one, and Karyn serves as the group leader for this initiative. Those interested in learning more about the project can contact Karyn at 812-275-2627 or the First United Methodist Church at 1409 K St., Bedford. It was also announced that Karyn is a prospective new member of Altrusa, and Mary Barnes has sponsored her.
Treasurer Sara Kern presented the August finance report, which was filed for audit. Mary Barnes reported on behalf of the audit committee that the audit of the last fiscal year’s finance books was completed with no issues found. The audit committee comprises Bill, Mary, Norma Hoffman, and Donna Rainey.
President Bill reminded attendees of the need for a new slate of officers to be voted on in March 2025. Members interested in running for these positions were encouraged to contact committee members Bill, Patty Kirkman, Jeanie Edwards, Mary Gabbard, Gloria Owen, and Fannie Lee. Patty Kirkman requested ideas for the International Altrusa Awards, including the Nina Faye Calhoun for International Relations, Mamie L. Bass for Service, and Letha H. Brown for Literacy.
Loretta Bailey delivered twenty magazines to each of the five local nursing homes last month. Becky Bailey shared a thank-you note from Hoosier Hills Credit Union after receiving pictures of the group assembling bags.
Additionally, Becky reported on applying for a $2,500 grant from International Altrusa to support the local LARC program modules “Moving Toward Independence.”
She also distributed Georgia Pecan/nut order forms so the membership could start taking orders. Norma Hoffman is still seeking volunteers to help the Lions Club with the Pancake Festival on October 5th, particularly from 8:00 until 10:00 a.m.
Suzie Turner and Kelly Myers expressed gratitude to club members for continuing to donate books, especially children’s books, to the Avoca Little Library.
Tammy Harrell requested Sammie Polley report that the club has completed 1,200 pounds of plastic caps and lids out of the needed 4,000 pounds for the Parks Department. This is in preparation for additional benches, picnic tables, and trash bins for the 2025 season.
The next meeting is scheduled for October 14th at 5:30 at the annex of Southland Church of Christ. Guest speaker Warren Crawford will share information about the Bryantsville Hunger Relief Project.
