BLOOMINGTON — A Bloomington man has been sentenced to almost nine years in prison for a shooting incident that occurred in December 2022, resulting in the injury of another man.
Lewis Siegrist pleaded guilty on Thursday to amended charges of aggravated battery with a severe risk of death, a Level 3 felony, and possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, a Level 4 felony. As part of the plea agreement, prosecutors dropped the remaining charges against him.
The judge handed down a 10-year sentence for the aggravated battery charge and a 6-year sentence for the gun possession charge. These sentences will be served concurrently, effectively resulting in a total prison term of 10 years.
The shooting took place on December 27, 2022, at approximately 5:30 p.m. near the intersection of Kirkwood Avenue and South Adams Street. Police discovered a 42-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his upper torso in the vicinity. The victim was transported to the hospital and survived his injuries.
Further investigation revealed that the shooting occurred in the backyard of a residence in the 1500 block of West Kirkwood Avenue. Detectives determined that Siegrist had approached the victim during an argument with a woman and shot him with a handgun. When the victim attempted to call 911, Siegrist reportedly stole his phone.
Law enforcement apprehended Siegrist several hours after the incident at a Speedway gas station in Spencer, Indiana, where they also recovered the handgun used in the shooting.
At the time of the offense, Siegrist was on probation for a previous methamphetamine possession case. He received credit for completing that sentence while being held for the shooting, and the additional time served has been applied to his most recent sentencing.
