BEDFORD – Kenzi Henkle powered Seymour to the end of its 10-game losing streak.
Henkle recorded a hat trick in the first half as the Owls conquered Bedford North Lawrence 5-1 on Thursday.
The Owls (2-10 overall, 1-3 in the Hoosier Hills Conference) had scored only seven times during the long streak, but Henkle personally concluded that slump with two breakaway goals in a five-minute span. She made a long run through traffic for the first goal at 29:02, then took a lofted pass over the defense and blasted a wide-open winner into the lower left corner of the net at 24:26.
With starting BNL goalie Madalyn Mason still sidelined by a concussion, the Stars were forced to send freshman Summer Hughes (who had never played the position) in front of the net. Seymour added two more goals prior to intermission. Ella Brock converted a shot at 18:43, and Henkle found an opening at 6:04.
“They took advantage of the opportunities we gave them in front of the goal,” BNL coach Bret Roberts said. “We had some opportunities but didn’t score off of them.”
BNL (1-8, 0-5) got on the board in the second half when Jayella Filler converted a penalty kick. But the Owls added an insurance goal from Emma Woodard as the Stars came up short in the quest for their first conference win since 2018.
“I thought we matched them well and that the score didn’t necessarily show an accurate depiction of the game,” Roberts said. “They were fast and physical but I felt like we were able to stay with them.”
BNL will host Jeffersonville on Saturday.
