Private softball pitching lesson lands man in jail on child molestation charges

NEWBURGH – Indiana State Police have arrested a 71-year-old Newburgh man on charges of child molestation following an investigation into allegations of inappropriate conduct during a private softball pitching lesson.

Roger K. Ford was taken into custody Monday afternoon at his Newburgh home without incident. The arrest comes after a months-long investigation that began on July 11, when authorities received information that Ford had allegedly inappropriately touched an 11-year-old girl during a softball coaching session near Lamar.

Following a thorough review of the case, the Spencer County Prosecutor’s Office filed criminal charges against Ford and issued a felony warrant for his arrest. At approximately 12:10 p.m. on Monday, Indiana State Police executed the warrant, apprehending Ford at his residence.

Ford is facing two serious felony charges:

  1. Child Seduction with a Child 13 years or younger, a Level 3 Felony
  2. Child Molesting with a Child under 14 years of age, a Level 4 Felony

The suspect is currently being held at the Spencer County Jail on bond. As of 2:00 p.m. on the day of the arrest, authorities had not yet released a mugshot of the accused.

This case underscores the importance of vigilance and prompt reporting in protecting minors from potential abuse. It also highlights the severe legal consequences faced by those accused of crimes against children.

Sergeant Detective Brock Werne and Detective C.J. Boeckman of the Indiana State Police led the investigation. As the case progresses through the legal system, authorities urge anyone with additional information related to this case or any suspected instances of child abuse to come forward and contact law enforcement immediately.

Parents and guardians are reminded to maintain open lines of communication with children involved in sports or other activities with adult instructors and to report any suspicious behavior to the appropriate authorities.
