Highway crews preparing for winter, removing debris under bridges

LAWRENCE CO.— During a meeting with county commissioners on Tuesday morning, Lawrence County Highway Superintendent Brian Sowder provided an update on ongoing maintenance activities. He reported that crews focus on preparing for winter.

“We are hauling sand and working to get equipment ready,” he added.

The Lawrence County Highway Department maintains 675 miles of roads, 128 bridges, and approximately 3,500 culverts and small structures.

The culvert work on Arthur Road, just off Popcorn Church Road, and Logan Donica Road, about a mile off Donica Church Road, has been delayed due to rain. Arthur Road will now be closed on Wednesday, and Logan Donica Road will be closed on Thursday. Again, this is dependent on weather conditions. The roads will just be closed during the culvert replacement and reopened when the work is completed.

Highway crews are clearing debris from bridges and also working on ditching.

Sowerd is also preparing to apply for funding during a highly competitive call for a Community Crossing Grant. Funding for Community Crossings comes from the state’s local road and bridge matching grant fund. The Community Crossings initiative has provided nearly $1.7 billion in state-matching funds for local road improvement projects since 2016.
