Venzago returns to the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra for a weekend of Schumann and Bruch

INDIANAPOLIS—Enjoy a musical journey as former ISO Music Director Mario Venzago returns to conduct the music of Robert Schumann, Bruch, and Jennifer Higdon. The stellar musicians of the ISO invite you to explore the Rhinelands in Schumann’s 3rd Symphony. Schumann was one of the first major composers of the Romantic era in the 1800s. Violinist Karen Gomyo, whom the Chicago Tribune describes as “a first-rate artist of real musical command, vitality, brilliance, and intensity,” performs Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1. This concerto is one of the most popular violin concertos in the solo violin repertoire.

The concert opens with Jennifer Higdon’s 1999 composition Blue Cathedral. Higdon’s composition is one of her most performed works and has received a positive response from critics. Tim Smith of The Baltimore Sun said, “The music seems to emit and reflect light as it moves from stillness to exuberance and back again, tapering off ethereally. If you didn’t know the personal story behind it, the music could still touch your heart; when you do know that story, it can touch your soul.”
