ELLETTSVILLE – Bedford North Lawrence won two three-set battles in doubles to edge Edgewood 3-2 during boys high school tennis action on Monday.
The Stars (4-16) closed the regular season with a thrilling win.
“It was one for the books,” BNL coach Ian Dillman said. “This match is a great example of why I became a coach. These close matches, love them. These types of matches only make us better. I wish we had this win earlier in the season, it could’ve made a huge difference with our mental levels for the season. However, late is better than never, in my opinion.”
In doubles, Orion Hill and Neal Patel dropped the first set before rallying to clip Jaylin Luedemann and Austin Nunn 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 at No.1.
“They looked out of it in the first set,” Dillman said. “Orion didn’t look like himself, it took all of Neal’s ability to pull Orion out of his slump, to pull the match back in their favor. Watching those two out there is like watching a horror movie. You don’t know what’s going to happen, but you know you’re going to scream a few times watching them. Their opponents didn’t take them seriously after that first set, which helped us out a lot. We brought the heat and energy to them in the second and third sets.”
At No.2, Micah Carter and Corbin Wyatt slipped past Cam Abel and Sam Paul 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
“What a match,” Dillman said. “It was all over the place. First we were down across the board, then they started working their magic to snatch the first set. They kept their cool against players who could get balls back and they didn’t come back pretty, which helped them win a few points. They struggled a little in the second set, but with the team behind them they closed it out strong. It came down to them to decide the match. Shout out to Micah for always bringing the energy to help his doubles partner out.”
BNL’s Reece Goodgame bounced Ryne Klinger 6-1, 6-0 at No.3 singles.
“As always, I can count on Reece to get the ball rolling,” Dillman said. “He rolled over his guy. Every time I walk up to the fence to talk with him, he tells me what to do for himself. All I say is ‘Great plan, now go kick some butt.’ And he does, each and every single time. That dude is a fighter and plan maker.”
The Stars will face Trinity Lutheran in the first round of the IHSAA sectional at Seymour on Wednesday.
