BLOOMINGTON — The Indiana University Police Department is investigating a series of thefts of electric bicycles and scooters reported across campus in the past week.
The thefts occurred at various locations, with the first incident reported on September 15 and the most recent on September 24. On September 15 and again on September 22, an electric bike was stolen from the Foster Jenkinson bike rack, where a cable lock securing the bike was cut.
On September 18, another e-bike was taken from the bike rack outside Woodburn Hall. On September 24, an electric scooter was also stolen outside Memorial Stadium near the Tobias Nutrition Center. Earlier, on September 23 and 24, an e-scooter was removed from the southwest bike rack outside Forest Quad despite being secured with a lock. Police noted that the suspect could slide the e-scooter out without cutting the lock.
Police have provided limited suspect information for the theft at Memorial Stadium, stating that three white males were observed approaching the e-scooter before leaving with it. Unfortunately, officers were unable to locate the suspects.
The crime notice also indicates that several other reports of electric bike and scooter thefts since the beginning of the year have been made that were not detailed in the recent notice.
The IUPD urges anyone with information about these thefts or other crimes on campus to contact them at 812-855-4111. As the investigation continues, campus officials encourage students and staff to remain vigilant and take precautions to secure their personal property.
