Jury finds man not guilty of battery, intimidation and official misconduct

MARTIN CO. – A Martin Circuit Court jury found Matthew Ray Copeland, of Shoals, not guilty of battery, intimidation, and official misconduct.

Judge Daniel Murrie presided over the case. Copeland was represented by Christopher Gaal, David Anthony Staples, and Megan Sue Von Rutenberg. Presenting the case for the state was Special Prosecutor Stan Levco.

Indiana State Police Detective Sergeant David Mitchell filed for and received an arrest warrant for then-29-year-old Matthew Ray Copeland of Shoals following an investigation into a battery that allegedly occurred on October 15, 2021, in Martin County.

The investigation began when the Indiana State Police received information that Copeland had possibly battered a patient who was being transported via ambulance to a local hospital.

Detective Sergeant David Mitchell concluded the investigation, and all findings were turned over to a Special Prosecutor for review. As a result, Prosecuting Attorneys Chris Gall and Stan Levco filed the following charges in Martin County Court, officials misconduct, felony intimidation, and battery.

On Tuesday, March 8, 2022, Copeland turned himself in at the Martin County Jail.
