Charity organization honors Superintendent Carter with scholarship in his name

CICERO— On Monday, the charity organization Shop for Kids announced a scholarship honoring the legacy of Indiana State Police Superintendent Doug Carter. Shop announced the Kids Board Members after their fundraising golf event at The Sagamore Club in Noblesville.

In conjunction with Hamilton Heights Youth Assistance, the $1,000 scholarship will be available to a Hamilton Heights student each year for the next ten years. Hamilton Heights Superintendent Dr. Derek Arrowwood will work with Doug Carter to determine the criteria for the scholarship.

Shop for Kids Board Member Dustin Dixon said, “For more than 40 years, Doug Carter has been a public safety staple in the Cicero Community and has offered tremendous support to Hamilton Heights Schools. We honor his legacy with this scholarship and look forward to helping students achieve their goals.”

While serving as the Sheriff of Hamilton County, Doug Carter played a key role in the formation of Shop for Kids. The organization began in 2008 when Deputy Todd Green and his father, Deputy Edwin “Bud” Green, approached Carter with the idea of raising money to take children Christmas Shopping. Each year since then, Shop for Kids has provided a Christmas shopping experience for Hamilton County families in need. As the organization grows, so does its ability to extend its community support beyond the Christmas shopping trips.

In response to the announcement, Doug Carter said. “Rarely am I at a loss for words. Shop for Kids and Hamilton Heights are providing me with this opportunity, which is humbling. Serving this community has been my greatest honor, and I look forward to working with Dr. Arrowwood to find the most effective use for this scholarship.”
