Seymour woman struck by train after lying on tracks

SEYMOUR – A woman was seriously injured after being struck by a CSX locomotive late Tuesday night in Seymour. The incident occurred around 10:47 p.m. at the intersection of O’Brien Street and Reliance Avenue, prompting an immediate response from the Seymour Police Department.

Upon arrival, officers discovered 62-year-old Terre Newport suffering from significant injuries, including trauma to her head, right arm, and right leg. First responders provided immediate medical attention, and she was subsequently airlifted to a hospital in Indianapolis for further treatment.

According to the train conductor, Newport was lying on the tracks when the train approached. The conductor activated the train’s horn to alert her, prompting Newport to momentarily raise herself before lying back down. Realizing the train was imminent, she attempted to escape but was ultimately struck by the moving locomotive.

The circumstances leading to Newport’s presence on the tracks remain unclear, and authorities are investigating the incident. Local officials are urging the community to exercise caution near railway tracks to prevent similar accidents in the future.
