Obituary: Melvin L. Oliver

August 15, 1954 – October 9, 2024

Melvin Oliver, 70, of Shoals, passed away at 6:17 pm on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at his residence. Born August 15, 1954, in Bedford, he was the son of James A. and Mary Catherine (Cobb) Oliver. He married Edna Flo Wright-Cobb, and she survives. Melvin retired from NSWC Crane as an Ammunitions Truck Driver and was a member of Trinity Springs Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Air Force for 21 years and was a member of the Masonic Lodge of the 32nd Degree, Elk’s Lodge, Moose Lodge, Shoals Legion, and the Oolitic VFW.


Survivors include his wife, Flo, of Shoals; father, James A. Oliver (Barbara); Children, Michelle Boettcher (Cory). Chris Oliver (Maggie), Brian Oliver (Stephanie), Kellie Welby and significant other James Norman, Tony Weldon, Jeff Weldon (Sandy) Richard Cobb, Tammy Haley (Dan) Tonya Bridwell (Van), Tracey Hampton (Tim); sisters, Teresa Whitt (Jim), and Tina Bradley (Ron); brother, Andy Oliver. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Oliver, and brothers, Stacey Oliver and Russell Oliver.


Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 pm on Sunday, October 13, 2024, in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary, with Martin Jones officiating and Masonic Rites. Burial will follow at Bryantsville Cemetery, and military rites will be accorded at the grave. Visitation will be held from 10:00 am to the time of service on Sunday.
