Seymour Fire Department warns of lithium-ion battery dangers

SEYMOUR – The Seymour Fire Department is urging residents to be aware of the dangers associated with lithium-ion batteries, which power a wide range of devices from smartphones to e-bikes. These batteries, while convenient, can pose a fire hazard if not handled properly.

Lithium-ion batteries can overheat, catch fire, or even explode if damaged, overcharged, or improperly disposed of. It’s crucial to understand the risks and take precautions to prevent incidents.

The fire department recommends the following safety tips:

  • Charge batteries in a safe environment: Avoid charging batteries on beds, couches, or near flammable materials.
  • Use the correct charger: Always use the charger provided by the manufacturer.
  • Monitor for signs of damage: If a battery shows signs of swelling, leaking, or unusual heat, stop using it immediately.
  • Properly dispose of batteries: Do not throw batteries in the trash. Many retailers and recycling centers accept them for safe disposal.

By following these guidelines, residents can help reduce the risk of fires and injuries related to lithium-ion batteries.
