Couple arrested after two-year-old found badly bruised in Columbus park

COLUMBUS— A disturbing case of alleged child abuse has led to the arrest of a couple in Columbus, Indiana. Hanna McBride, 25, and her husband, Jose Manuel Villeda Gomez, 22, are facing preliminary charges of neglect of a dependent, a Level 5 felony, after their 2-year-old son was found with severe injuries at a local park.

The incident came to light on Wednesday when officers from the Columbus Police Department responded to a call at Nexus Park, located at 2100 25th Street. The report indicated suspicious marks on a 2-year-old boy.

Upon arrival, investigators observed numerous red marks and bruises on the child’s arms, face, and torso. The severity of the situation became even more apparent after a medical evaluation revealed that the young boy had also suffered broken ribs.

Detectives involved in the case believe that many of the bruises and red marks were the result of the child being struck with a cord. The nature and extent of the injuries prompted immediate action from authorities.

In response to the dire circumstances, the child was taken into protective custody and placed with a family member to ensure his safety and well-being.

McBride and Villeda Gomez were taken into custody and are currently held at the Bartholomew County Jail. As the investigation continues, they may face additional charges pending further findings.

Local authorities urge anyone with information related to this case or any suspected child abuse to come forward and contact the Columbus Police Department immediately.

Those facing criminal charges are considered innocent unless convicted through due legal proceedings. Accusations alone do not imply guilt; the judicial system will evaluate the presented evidence to reach a verdict.
