General Motors issues safety recall for 2018-2019 Chevy Silverado models

INDIANA – General Motors has announced a safety recall affecting specific units of the 2018 Chevy Silverado 1500 and the 2018-2019 Chevy Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD. The recall addresses potential defects in the roof rail airbag (RRAB) inflators, which may pose safety risks to occupants.

According to GM, the affected vehicles may contain a manufacturing defect that could result in inflator end cap separation or sidewall rupture in the roof rail airbag inflators located above the headliner on the roof rails.

The company stated, “General Motors is voluntarily recalling certain model-year 2018 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 1500s and 2018-2019 Silverado and Sierra 2500/3500 pickups for roof rail air bag inflators that may contain a manufacturing defect. Dealers will replace the suspect airbag modules. Our highest priorities are our customers’ safety and satisfaction, and we’re taking this action out of an abundance of caution.”

Potential Hazards

If the end cap separates from the airbag inflator or if a sidewall rupture occurs, the compressed gas may escape, potentially propelling components into the vehicle and injuring occupants.

The Fix

Certified GM service technicians will replace the suspect left and right side roof rail airbag modules in affected vehicles.

Affected Vehicles

The recall includes approximately 2,061 GM trucks in the U.S., broken down as follows:

  • 2018 Chevy Silverado 1500: 1,189 units
  • 2018-2019 Chevy Silverado 2500HD/3500HD: 252 units
  • 2018 GMC Sierra 1500
  • 2018-2019 GMC Sierra 2500HD/3500HD
