Natural gas leak contained near IU campus

BLOOMINGTON—A natural gas leak near the intersection of Atwater Avenue and Faculty Avenue has been successfully contained, according to an alert issued by IU Notify on Friday. The leak was reported shortly after noon, prompting immediate action from IU Police and Public Safety, who warned the public that containment efforts could take several hours.

Emergency crews responded swiftly to the scene to address the situation and ensure the safety of residents and students in the area. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the leak was contained.

This marks the second gas leak on Atwater Avenue in just three months. A similar leak was reported a few blocks away near Park Avenue in July, raising concerns about potential infrastructure issues.

Local authorities are investigating the cause of both incidents, and residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious smells or signs of gas leaks.

As always, the community’s safety remains a top priority, and officials are committed to maintaining a safe environment.
