Over 500 varieties of frozen waffles recalled across U.S. and Canada due to listeria risk

INDIANA — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a widespread recall of frozen waffles on Friday due to potential listeria contamination. The recall affects more than 500 varieties of waffles sold throughout the United States and Canada, raising concerns for consumers across North America.

The manufacturer behind the recalled products is TreeHouse Foods, Inc., based in Oak Brook, Illinois. The FDA warns that listeria can pose serious health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. In some cases, listeria infections can be fatal.

The recall encompasses a wide range of popular brands and retailers, including:

  • Aldi (Breakfast Best brand)
  • Dollar General (Clover Valley brand)
  • Food Lion
  • Giant Eagle
  • Hannaford
  • Harris Teeter
  • H-E-B
  • PriceChopper (PICS brand)
  • Publix
  • Schnucks
  • Southeastern Grocers
  • Target (Good & Gather brand)
  • Tops
  • Walmart (Great Value brand)

Additionally, the FDA noted that the recall extends to waffles sold under the following brand names:

  • Foodhold
  • Kodiak Cakes
  • Simple Truth

Consumers are urged to check their freezers for any potentially affected products. The FDA has provided a comprehensive list of the recalled waffles, providing specific details on the affected products.

The FDA said the issue was found during routine testing at the manufacturing facility.

No confirmed reports of illness were linked to the recalled products as of October 18.

This recall reminds consumers of the importance of food safety and the potential risks associated with contaminated food products. Consumers who have purchased any of the recalled waffles are advised not to consume them and to return the products to the place of purchase for a full refund.

The FDA and TreeHouse Foods are working closely to address the situation and ensure that all potentially contaminated products are removed from the market.

Healthy individuals may only have short-term symptoms, including high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. The FDA also said a listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

Consumers with questions or concerns about the recall are encouraged to contact TreeHouse Foods at 800-596-2903 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. CST.
