FORT WAYNE – At the request of the Allen County Sheriff, detectives with the Indiana State Police are investigating the death of an Allen County Jail inmate that occurred earlier this morning.
The preliminary investigation found that at approximately 7:18 a.m. on Monday, October 21, a jail nurse had followed up on a medical check with inmate Jose Velazquez Trejo, 25, of Fort Wayne, in his holding cell. Trejo was dealing with what were believed to be withdrawal symptoms, possibly from narcotics use (before his incarceration on October 18, 2024). After the initial morning check, the jail nurse began preparing paperwork to transport Trejo to a local hospital for further medical treatment.
At 7:58 a.m., jail staff found that Trejo had gone unresponsive in his holding cell. Jail staff immediately called for an ambulance and began CPR on Trejo until medics arrived. Medics took over life-saving attempts but pronounced Trejo deceased in jail at approximately 8:30 a.m.
The Allen County Coroner has scheduled an autopsy for tomorrow morning at the Northeast Forensic Center in Fort Wayne.
Trejo had been held in the Allen County jail since October 18, 2024, on arrest warrants out of LaGrange and Noble Counties. He was pending transfer on those warrants.
The Allen County Police Department made family notifications.
The Indiana State Police, Allen County Police Department, and the Allen County Coroner’s Office are continuing this investigation. At this time, there is no further information to release.
