LAWRENCE CO.— Circuit Court Judge Nathan Nikirk provided the Lawrence County Commissioners Tuesday morning with an important update on Southern Indiana Adult Guardianship services, a program designed to support vulnerable adults in the community. Former Judge Andrea McCord championed this initiative in 2010 to address critical needs within Lawrence County.
The program, funded by a grant from the Indiana Supreme Court and matching funds from Lawrence County, aims to offer essential services and protections for adults with intellectual disabilities, dementia, and other cognitive impairments. Currently, the program serves 43 clients across five counties, with 25 residing in Lawrence County. The clients’ age range is significant, with the youngest being 23 and the oldest 93.
The organization steps in as court-appointed legal guardians when no family member or other individual is available or willing to take on that responsibility.
“Everyone deserves quality care, dignity, respect, and community support to lead a safe life as independent as possible,” emphasized Sarah Walker, program director.
This update highlights the ongoing commitment to ensuring that some of the community’s most vulnerable members receive the care and support they need. As the program grows, it aims to enhance its services and reach even more needy individuals. The commissioners expressed their support for the initiative, recognizing its vital role in promoting the well-being of Lawrence County residents.
