Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office launches hiring initiative for Merit Deputy and Corrections Officer Positions

LAWRENCE CO.— The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office has announced opening a hiring process for Merit Deputies (police officers) and Corrections (jail officers) as part of an ongoing effort to enhance community safety and support.

Sheriff Greg Day emphasized the importance of finding dedicated individuals for the Merit Deputy role. “We are looking for hard-working, highly motivated individuals with impeccable integrity who wish to make a positive difference in our community,” he stated. Merit Deputy Position

To qualify for the Merit Deputy position, applicants must be at least 21, possess a valid driver’s license, and have completed a high school diploma or GED. The application process includes a physical agility test, a written exam, an interview, background checks, and drug testing.

The starting salary for a Merit Deputy is $56,040, with the potential for additional paid holidays, bringing the approximate annual compensation to around $59,000. Benefits include paid time off (PTO), paid or compensatory overtime, a Sheriff’s Pension plan, a yearly uniform allowance, and comprehensive insurance options (health, vision, dental, and life). Officers also have opportunities for advancement in various specialties, including detective, SWAT, and K9 operations.

Corrections/Jail Officer Position

In addition, Sheriff Day highlighted the vital role of Corrections Officers. “Our corrections officers are the unsung heroes in the criminal justice system. They provide an essential role for our community and for the incarcerated individuals that we house,” he stated. He noted that this position is an excellent entry point for those aspiring to a career in law enforcement.

Applicants for the Corrections Officer role must also be at least 21 years old, hold a valid driver’s license, and have a high school diploma or GED. The hiring process includes a written exam, interview, background check, and drug testing.

Starting pay for Corrections Officers is $19.11 per hour, with an estimated annual income of around $42,000 after factoring in paid holidays. Benefits include PTO, overtime options, a PERF pension plan, provided uniforms and equipment, and comprehensive health insurance. The position offers excellent training and opportunities for advancement.
