Obituary: David O. Riggs

September 17, 1939 – October 24, 2024

David O. Riggs, 85, of Oolitic, passed away at 10:35 pm on Thursday, October 24, 2024, at his residence.


Born September 17, 1939, in Kokomo, IN, he was the son of Elmer and Mariene (Denbo) Riggs. He married Margaret Girdley on August 29, 1959, and she survives. He retired from NSWC Crane as a tool and die maker. His hobby was woodworking. He graduated from Bedford High School with the class of 1957.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a lifelong member of Gillen Post #33 American Legion. He was also a member of the Oolitic Kiwanis and the Oolitic Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday school, served as a deacon, and was a trustee.


Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Margaret, of Oolitic; a daughter, Kirsten Gore and husband, John, of Bedford; a grandson, Jackson Gore, of Bloomington; a sister, Deidra Marsh and husband, Bob, of Bedford; a brother, John Riggs and wife, Myra, of Solsberry; a sister-in-law, Iris Riggs, of Indianapolis; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. E.D. and Mariene Riggs; a brother, Dr. Donald Riggs; a sister, Yvonne Sandefur; and husband, Max; and sister-in-law, Barbara Terry.


Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 29, in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary, with Rev. Taylor Quinley and Rev. Richard Tallman officiating. Members of Gillen Post #33 American Legion will accord military rites. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens.
