Man killed during confrontation on east side of New Albany

NEW ALBANY – A New Albany man was shot and killed during a Saturday evening dispute in New Albany.

Around 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, 68-year-old Kevin Campbell was inside his residence at 1005 Slate Run Road, New Albany.  While inside, Campbell heard a knock on his bedroom window and went to the door of his home after retrieving a small caliber rifle.

Upon opening the door, Campbell observed 41-year-old Christopher Proctor standing outside, holding a sword.  Detectives believe Proctor approached the doorway towards Campbell with the sword in hand, at which point Campbell fired a single shot.  The gunshot struck Proctor in the chest.  He was later pronounced dead at the scene by the Floyd County Coroner’s Office.

After a nearly two-hour delay, Campbell phoned the New Albany Police Department to report a deceased male in his yard.  As officers arrived at the residence, Campbell informed officers that he had shot Proctor.  Campbell was detained and transported by detectives to the Sellersburg Post for interviews.

Currently, Campbell is charged with obstruction of justice, a Level 6 Felony.  He has been transported to and lodged in the Floyd County Jail.

This case remains under investigation by detectives and crime scene investigators.

Those facing criminal charges are considered innocent unless convicted through due legal proceedings. Accusations alone do not imply guilt; the judicial system will evaluate the presented evidence to reach a verdict.
