Indiana State Police investigating officer-involved shooting in Southport

SOUTHPORT – Indiana State Police Detectives were requested to investigate an officer-involved shooting in Southport. The Southport Police Chief made the request.

On Monday, October 28, at 12:29 a.m., a Southport Police Officer attempted a traffic stop near the entrance to Berkley Commons Apartment Complex. The driver led the officer to the 2000 block of Appleton Drive in Southport. The driver then got out and fled on foot.

During the foot pursuit, it is believed the suspect fired at least one shot, and the officer discharged his weapon toward the suspect. The driver was taken into custody and had injuries consistent with gunshot wounds. He was treated on scene by officers until medics arrived, then transported by ambulance to a local hospital; his injuries are believed to be non-life threatening. No Officers or uninvolved people were injured in this incident.

Indiana State Police Detectives and crime scene investigators responded. The officer involved was equipped with a body-worn camera, which was activated during this incident.

The suspect in this case is now under arrest for outstanding warrants. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will determine charges pertaining to this incident upon reviewing the investigation. All crimes mentioned are alleged, and all suspects are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in court.
