Counterfeit money circulating in Greene County

GREENE CO. —Authorities in Greene County are alerting the public about counterfeit money circulating in the area, specifically fake $100 bills reported by several local banks and businesses.

The Linton Police Department has received multiple reports of counterfeit bills, all appearing to share the same serial number: “B 66648300 A.” Alarmingly, some establishments that accepted these counterfeit bills noted that they passed the marker test, often used to identify fake currency.

David Wright, Banking Center Manager at First Financial Bank in Sullivan, cautioned that the marker test is not a foolproof method for detecting counterfeits.

“U.S. currency is made with a special ink that raises from the bill’s surface. You should be able to feel ridges where the ink is. It’s unique and specifically designed to help avoid counterfeiting,” Wright explained.

As the investigation continues, police urge residents and business owners to remain vigilant and report any suspicious currency they may encounter.
