Bedford man arrested on alcohol charges after traffic stop for damaged tail light

BEDFORD– A Bedford man was arrested early Sunday morning, November 3, after a traffic stop in the city.

Caleb Conn

Caleb S. Conn, 25, of Bedford, was arrested on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, OWI endangerment, OWI with a prior conviction, and driving while his driver’s license was suspended following the stop at approximately 1:26 a.m. on Lincoln Avenue near the intersection with 10th Street.

This was Conn’s second offense in the past year. He was convicted of OWI on March 26.

According to Bedford Police Department Sgt. Max Uebelhoer was on routine patrol when he observed Conn driving a silver Honda with a damaged tail light emitting a white light, which prompted the traffic stop. Sgt. Uebelhoer approached the vehicle. He identified Conn as the driver and two female passengers, later identified as Autumn Barger and Georgia Bryson.

Upon speaking with Conn, the officer detected the strong odor of alcohol coming from the vehicle and noticed that Conn’s eyes appeared bloodshot, glassy, and red. Additionally, Conn’s speech was slow and slurred. When asked if he had been drinking, Conn admitted to consuming one or two beers. He also informed the officer that his driver’s license was suspended and the vehicle’s registration was invalid.

Conn failed several field sobriety tests. He had a blood-alcohol content of 0.093 percent, which is above the legal limit of 0.08%. Officer Turner transported Conn to IU Health Bedford, where a blood draw was conducted.

Conn’s passengers were also intoxicated. Officer Daugherty gave them a courtesy ride back to their residences. Jackson’s Heavy Haul towed the vehicle.

Those facing criminal charges are considered innocent unless convicted through due legal proceedings. Accusations alone do not imply guilt; the judicial system will evaluate the presented evidence to reach a verdict.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
