BEDFORD– A Bedford man was sentenced to prison on October 31 after a new theft charge revoked his probation.
Brandon A. Monroe, 34, was sentenced by Lawrence Superior Court II Judge Robert Cline to 532 days in the Indiana Department of Correction (IDOC).
Monroe had previously pleaded guilty to possession of methamphetamine, a Level 6 felony, on April 18, 2024, as part of a negotiated plea agreement with the State of Indiana. As part of the agreement, he was sentenced to 547 days in prison, with 533 days suspended and the remaining 365 days to be served on supervised probation.
However, while on probation, Monroe was charged with theft in Monroe County, a new criminal offense that led to his probation violation. Monroe admitted to the charge, prompting Judge Cline to revoke the suspended portion of his sentence.
“Probation is a chance for defendants to prove they can change, but committing new crimes while on probation is a clear violation of that trust,” said Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Kristen Meza, who represented the State of Indiana in the case. “The court has a responsibility to hold individuals accountable when they break the terms of their release.”
As a result of his admission of guilt and the new charge, Judge Cline sentenced Monroe to serve the entire 532 days of his original prison sentence in the IDOC, effectively terminating his probation.
