LAWRENCE CO. – Lawrence County authorities are investigating a complex incident involving allegations of assault and attempted murder following a shooting on November 4, 2024, which left Tommie K. Jones, 44, of Indianapolis, with multiple gunshot wounds.

Nina A. Devillez, 31, also of Indianapolis, was arrested following the incident and faces charges including attempted murder and battery with a deadly weapon. Investigators continue to review evidence, including conflicting statements from both parties and two 911 calls.

According to statements given to police, Jones reported meeting Devillez outside an Office Depot on Payne Road in Indianapolis on November 3. After spending time together at a restaurant, they returned to Devillez’s apartment. Jones told authorities he had just met Devillez and did not know her last name but agreed to spend time with her.

On November 4, Devillez reportedly called Jones and offered to meet him again, driving him to what Jones described as a secluded home on US Highway 50. Jones told investigators that Devillez instructed him to walk up a driveway and began acting “sketchy,” pulling out a handgun when he questioned her intentions. Devillez reportedly told Jones the gun was for protection against coyotes in the area. Sensing escalating tension, Jones managed to call 911.

In the recorded call, Jones can be heard pleading with Devillez and begging her not to kill him as their interaction grows increasingly hostile. Shots are heard in the recording as Jones is struck in the buttocks, left elbow, and right foot. Authorities later reviewed a separate 911 call made by Devillez, who alleged that Jones had assaulted her the night before and threatened her during their drive, prompting her to pull her gun in self-defense.

Responding officers from the Martin County Sheriff’s Office and Shoals Town Marshal’s Office located Devillez about 10 miles from the scene. She was found at the intersection of US Highway 50 and Red School Road, where police recovered a black Beretta 9mm handgun, which Devillez admitted using in the shooting. Devillez was transported to IU Health Bedford Hospital for a sexual assault examination. She told hospital staff that Jones had assaulted her the previous night, causing her to fear for her safety.

Devillez now faces charges of attempted murder, battery with a deadly weapon, and criminal recklessness. The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office continues investigating the incident, reviewing evidence, including 911 calls, Devillez’s medical examination, and witness statements. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to establish a clearer understanding of the events that led to the shooting.
