ORLEANS –The Orleans Water Department is in the final stages of implementing a modernized water metering system across the town’s water distribution network. This upgrade involves replacing traditional water meters with advanced, automated units that will significantly enhance water usage tracking and leak detection accuracy and efficiency.
The new meters are equipped to transmit real-time readings directly to the town hall’s recordkeeping and billing software through an antenna system. This direct data transmission will streamline billing processes and offer a more efficient way to detect leaks. Unlike the previous system, where leaks often went unnoticed until a resident received their monthly bill or was notified by the town clerk, the new meters will allow for periodic monitoring, enabling faster leak detection and response.
Additionally, the new system features “acoustic” leak detection technology, which listens for sounds in the service lines that may indicate a leak. While this feature doesn’t identify the precise leak location, it can narrow it down to a specific area by measuring the volume of noise from surrounding meters, providing a valuable tool for maintenance teams.
The installation, funded by a federal COVID relief grant received two years ago, covers the costs of the meters and installation. Ongoing expenses, such as licensing and maintenance, will be managed locally. Currently, approximately 900 residential water meters are being upgraded, with larger commercial meters remaining unchanged.
The Orleans Water Department’s modernization project promises to save water, reduce residents’ costs, and provide a more sustainable approach to water management across the town.
