Indiana deer season opens Saturday: What you need to know before heading out

INDIANA — The wait is over — deer hunting season begins this Saturday, November 16, as Indiana’s firearm season officially opens. Hunters are reminded to be prepared and follow the necessary guidelines to ensure a safe and successful hunt.

Before heading into the woods, make sure you’ve got all the essentials:

  • Blaze orange clothing is required to ensure visibility and safety.
  • Your firearm or bow, depending on your method of hunting.
  • A printed or digital copy of your hunting license.

The firearm season will run through Sunday, December 1. If you haven’t purchased your hunting license yet, now is the time. For convenience, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) offers the Deer License Bundle, which provides hunting privileges for two antlerless deer and one antlered deer across multiple seasons, including youth, archery, firearms, muzzleloader, and special antlerless deer seasons.

Deer hunting is permitted daily from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset. Be sure to check local regulations for any specific rules in your area.

For younger hunters, the final free youth hunting days of 2024 will take place on November 30 and December 1. These special days give hunters under 18 the opportunity to hunt without needing to purchase a license or tag. The DNR’s youth hunts webpage has more details on youth hunts.

Hunters must review all rules and regulations before the season, as safety is a top priority. Whether you’re a seasoned hunter or heading out for the first time, staying informed, staying safe, and respecting the natural environment is essential.

If you have questions about equipment, regulations, or which license you need, contact the Deer Hotline at 812-334-3795 or email indeerhotline@dnr.IN.gov.
