WASHINGTON, D.C. — Rep. Erin Houchin (R-IN) announced that she is withdrawing from the race for Republican Conference Chair and will instead seek the position of Republican Conference Secretary.
In a statement, Houchin expressed her continued commitment to serving the American people and supporting the Republican Party’s leadership, specifically President Donald Trump. She highlighted her experience and qualifications for the role of Conference Secretary, noting her past leadership as the Elected Leader for the Freshman Class, her background as a public relations firm owner, and her time as a former state senator in Indiana.
“As Conference Secretary, I remain committed to working hard every day with our leadership and Conference to support President Trump, refine our message, and communicate it effectively to the American people,” Houchin said in a statement. “My experience has equipped me to serve in this role, and I hope to earn your support.”
Houchin, previously a candidate for Conference Chair, explained her decision to shift focus to the Secretary position to better leverage her skillset in supporting the Republican leadership and party messaging. The Republican Conference Secretary plays a key role in communications and organizing messaging for the party, a responsibility Houchin believes her experience uniquely qualifies her for.
In her announcement, Houchin expressed her full support for Rep. Lisa McClain (R-MI) in her bid for Conference Chair. “I would also like to announce my support for @RepLisaMcClain for Conference Chair,” Houchin said. “Her leadership, vision, and dedication to our conservative values will unite us in our message to the American people.”
McClain, a freshman lawmaker from Michigan, is widely regarded as a rising star within the Republican Party. Houchin’s endorsement is seen as a significant show of solidarity among Republicans as the party continues to navigate its leadership structure.
The race for Republican Conference leadership is expected to intensify in the coming weeks, as members of the party weigh in on the future direction of their leadership team and messaging strategy. Houchin’s pivot to the role of Secretary marks a shift in the leadership contest but underscores her ongoing dedication to the party’s success and unity.
