Woman arrested after domestic disturbance leads to disorderly conduct charge

BEDFORD – A Bedford woman was arrested on Friday, November 8, after an ongoing domestic disturbance escalated into a confrontation with law enforcement officers.

Cheryl Atteberry

Cheryl R. Atteberry, 40, of 239 Greenhill Addition Road, was charged with disorderly conduct, a Class B misdemeanor, following an incident that drew multiple police officers to her home.

According to the Lawrence County Police Department, dispatch received a report from a neighbor who complained of a verbal altercation between Atteberry and her significant other, Michael Baker. The caller told officers the yelling had been ongoing for approximately 45 minutes.

Upon arriving at the scene, LCPD officers encountered Atteberry in the driveway, shouting at the responding officers and demanding they leave. Officer Andrew Tillett and Officers Kenton Carter, Thomas Porter, and Chris Griggs spoke to Atteberry and advised her to calm down and return inside the residence. Despite multiple requests to stop yelling and de-escalate the situation, Atteberry continued to resist and was told she would be arrested for disorderly conduct if she did not comply.

The situation took a physical turn when Atteberry attempted to walk away from officers while continuing to yell. After grabbing her arm to stop her from retreating, Atteberry dropped to the ground in an attempt to pull away from the officers. Officers Carter and Tillett were able to restrain Atteberry and place her in handcuffs.

Atteberry was subsequently escorted to a patrol vehicle and transported to the Lawrence County Jail without further incident.

Neighbors from the area informed officers that arguments between Atteberry and Baker were a regular occurrence, with one neighbor stating that the couple had been arguing since 9 p.m. the previous night. According to police records, officers have responded to Atteberry’s residence on at least seven prior occasions due to similar domestic disturbances.

Atteberry was booked into jail and is facing charges of disorderly conduct related to her behavior during the incident.
