Mary Etta Gaddis, 90, passed away Friday, November 15, 2024, at her son’s residence.
Born May 22, 1934, in Mitchell, she was the daughter of Wendell Preston Gaines and Christina Bernice (Turney) Fishel. She married James Calvin Gaddis on March 21, 1952, and he preceded her in death July 18, 1995.
Mary worked at Trav-lers, Older Americans, Mitchell License Branch, and Mitchell Manor Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. She served as a Lawrence County Republican Precinct Committeeman and enjoyed working elections. Mary was a charter member of VFW Post 9107 Ladies Auxiliary. She was a sports fanatic and liked bowling. Mary was of the Christian faith and had been baptized, giving her heart to Jesus.
Survivors include her children, RuthAnne Beasley of Bedford, Joyce Eva Agan of Mitchell, James Wendell (Kathryn) Gaddis of Mitchell, William “Gene” Eugene (Betty) Gaddis of Bedford, and Rebecca Jane Gaddis of Mitchell; sister, Shirley Short of Pinellas Park, Florida; grandchildren, Jamie Sue Hopper and Jeremy Lee Gaddis; several other grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great great grandchildren, and great great great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She is survived by five generations.
Her parents, husband, daughters, Connie Sue Gaddis-Keen and Mary Ellen Smith, and grandson, James Michael Gaddis, preceded her in death.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, November 21, at Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center, with her son, Gene Gaddis, officiating. Burial will be at Mitchell Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday and from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service on Thursday.
