OOLITIC—The Oolitic Town Council held a special meeting on November 11 and voted on an important update to the town’s speed limits. The reversal of an ordinance of October 2023 that set the speed limits on all streets within the city limits of Oolitic to 25 MPH with the exception of Hoosier Avenue, which remained at 30 MPH. The ordinance was originally passed due to a state statute that mandated anything under a 25 MPH zone was not enforceable unless the town had an engineering report, which Oolitic could not locate at the time.
Based on an updated state statute effective July 2024, a speed limit of 20 MPH can now exist without an engineering study. Because of this, the council voted and unanimously approved reverting to 20 MPH on all streets in Oolitic except Hoosier Avenue, which will remain at 30 MPH.
