BEDFORD – Bedford North Lawrence’s Ethan Stancombe earned the top individual honor during the season-opening Super 6 Duals on Saturday.
Stancombe dominated the competition at 157 pounds, blasting through five matches (three by superior decisions) while winning the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler award. The Stars went 0-5 as a team in the six-team, round-robin event.
BNL, forfeiting five weight classes, suffered losses to North Harrison (44-34), Vincennes Lincoln (66-11), Perry Meridian (60-17), Mooresville (70-6) and Silver Creek (40-36). Mooresville won the overall team title.
“It’s not the start we wanted, but we are young and inexperienced,” BNL coach Mike Branam said. “The guys showed a lot of potential and fight, and we found some areas where we need to focus in the upcoming weeks.”
Stancombe recorded wins over North Harrison’s Gunner Pate (16-0), Lincoln’s Holden Lewis (19-2), Perry Meridian’s Lyric Mitchell (18-1), Mooresville’s Steelee Lynn (9-3) and Silver Creek’s Dylan Kidwell (by pin).
In the North Harrison match, BNL’s Dorian Couchman defeated Sullivan Bray 9-1 at 138. Wyatt Philpott pinned Perry Meridian’s Bryce Beckham at 120, Couchman won a 17-11 thriller against David Miller, and Asher Arce topped Steven Shull 7-4 at 175. Couchman also posted a 14-10 triumph over Mooresville’s Brady Johnson, and Philpott added a pin win over Silver Creek’s Alex Shal.
The Stars will host Scottsburg on Dec. 3
